Cricket is the world's most popular bat-and-ball sport, played between two teams of eleven players each on a field with a 22-yard (20-metre) pitch in the centre and a wicket at each end, each consisting of two bails balanced on three stumps.
The game begins when a fielding team member, known as the bowler, "bowls" (propels) the ball from one end of the pitch to the wicket at the other end, with a "over" being completed once they have done so legally six times. The batting side has one player at each end of the pitch, with the player opposite the bowler attempting to strike the ball with a bat.

When the bowler unfairly bowls the ball to the batter, the ball reaches the field boundary, or the two batters swap ends of the pitch, the batting side scores one run. The fielding team's goal is to prevent runs from being scored and to dismiss each batter (so they are "out", and are said to have "lost their wicket").
Being bowled, when the bowled ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and the fielding side either catching a hit ball before it touches the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease line in front of the wicket to complete a run, are both methods of dismissal. The innings ends when ten batters are struck out, and the teams switch roles. At the end of the game, the team with the most runs wins, assuming the opposing team has completed its one or two scheduled innings. In international matches, the game is adjudicated by two umpires who are assisted by a third umpire and match referee.
Cricket forms range from Twenty20, in which each team bats for a single innings of 20 overs and the game lasts about three hours, to Test matches, which last five days. Cricketers traditionally wear all-white uniforms, but in limited overs cricket, they wear club or team colours.
Some players wear protective gear to prevent injury from the ball, which is a hard, solid spheroid made of compressed leather with a slightly raised sewn seam enclosing a cork core layered with tightly wound string. Link 3
